OFFSPRING’S “SELF-ESTEEM”

from: Christine P Gray

Offspring’s “Self-Esteem” speaks of being stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship. It is about a man loving his partner who does not love him back and he has full knowledge of this but his low self-esteem prevents him from letting go. It is about settling for less than what one deserves because of a low self-perception.

However, according to the band, this song is not based on personal recount as many fans believe.

Offspring’s “Self-Esteem” is the second single from the punk band from Orange County’s third record “Smash” which was released in 1994.

Prior to this, the band, composed of Bryan “Dexter” Holland (vocals), Greg K (bass guitar) and Kevin Wasserman , also called “Noodle” (lead guitar) called themselves “Manic Subcidal”. They first started out as a band in 1984 and has gone through many drummers until they have settled with Atom Willard.

Under the band “Manic Subcidal”, they have released the song “Hopeless” and was part of a compilation album released by Mystic Records. From there, they changed their names into what we now know as “The Offspring” where they have released the single “7” Blackball/I’ll be Waiting” released under Black Label.

In 1991, they have produced the single “Baghdad” produced under Epitaph Records. The following year, they have recorded “Ignition” which has drawn attention to the band and what has started to put them on tour.

But their success really came after the landmark album “Smash”. The album was fueled by the hit singles “Come out and Play”, “Gotta Get Away” and “Self-Esteem”. The record sold a total of eight million copies.

The full lyrics of the song is as follows:

SELF-ESTEEM (Offspring)

I wrote her off for the 10th time today

And practice all the things I would say

But she came over

I lost my nerve

I took her back and made her dessert

Now I know I’m being used

That is okay man cause I like the abuse

I know she’s playing with me

That’s okay cause I got no self esteem

We make plans to go out at night

I wait till two then I turn out the light

All this rejection’s got me so low

If she keeps it up I just might tell her no

Chorus

When she’s saying that she wants only me

Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends

When she’s saying that I am like a disease

Then I wonder how much more I can spend

Well I guess I should speak up for myself

But I really think it is better this way

The more you suffer

The more it shows you really care

Right? yeah yeah yeah

Now I will relate this little bit

That happens more than I’d like to admit

Late at night she knocks on my door

Drunk again and looking to score

Now I know I should say no

But that’s kind of hard when she’s ready to go

I may be dumb

But I’m not a dweeb

I’m just a sucker with no self esteem

Chorus

When she’s saying that she wants only me

Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends

When she’s saying that I’m like a disease

Then I wonder how much more I can spend

Well I guess I should speak up for myself

But I really think it’s better this way

The more you suffer

The more it shows you really care

Right? yeah yeah yeah
